Biography

Alexander Heather is the associate principal bass of the Dallas Symphony Orchestra. He was a finalist in both the 2023 and 2025 International Society of Bassists Solo Competitions.

Alexander is a soloist and ensemble player with the Swiss-based LGT Young Soloists, described by Fanfare Magazine as “clearly one of the finest youth orchestras in Europe”. With the Young Soloists he has performed around the world at venues including the Musikverein in Vienna, the Kennedy Center in Washington D.C., Tonhalle Zurich, and Victoria Hall in Singapore. He also took part in their newly released album “Schubert & Airat Ichmouratov” under the Naxos label.

He has been a participant in a wide-range of summer music festivals, including the Wabass Institute in Indiana, the Heifetz Institute in Virgina, Domaine Forget de Charlevoix in Quebec, Canada, the Aspen Summer Music Festival in Colorado, and the Tanglewood Music Festival in Massachusetts.

Alexander was born in Mount Kisco, New York, began playing the double bass at age nine and took his early instruction at the Westchester Music Conservatory and the Juilliard School. In 2014 he moved with his family to Somerset, England to attend Wells Cathedral School as a Specialist Musician (2014-19) where he studied under David Heyes. He was a member of the National Youth Orchestra of Great Britain (2017-19) and won multiple solo competitions and awards. Alexander began his undergraduate studies at the Royal Academy of Music in London and later the Royal College of Music under Caroline Emery, where he completed his Bachelor of Music (Hons) in 2023. He then did his master’s degree at the Curtis institute of Music under Harold Robinson and Edgar Meyer (2023-25). While still at Curtis, he won a section position in the Dallas Symphony Orchestra in May followed by winning the associate principal position in September.
